Strontium Oxide Powder

Applications

Manufacture of Strontium Compounds:

Strontium oxide powder is used as an intermediate in the production of other strontium compounds like strontium carbonate (SrCO₃), strontium nitrate (Sr(NO₃)₂), and strontium aluminate. These compounds have wide uses in the production of fluorescent lights, fireworks, and colorants for glass and ceramics.

Ceramics and Glass Industry:

Glass Manufacturing: Strontium oxide is added to glass formulations to improve the clarity, density, and resistance to thermal shock. It is also used in the production of crystal glassware, where it enhances the brightness and refractive properties of the glass.

Ceramic Insulation: Strontium oxide is used to produce ceramic materials, especially for high-temperature applications. Its addition improves the thermal resistance and durability of ceramics.

Fluorescent Lighting:

Strontium compounds, particularly strontium aluminate, are used in phosphorescent applications, such as in the production of luminous paints, signs, and fluorescent lighting tubes. Strontium oxide acts as a precursor in the creation of such compounds, which are used to produce vivid colors in glow-in-the-dark products.

Fireworks and Pyrotechnics:

Strontium compounds are famous for producing bright red flames in fireworks. Strontium oxide is part of the precursor mixture for strontium nitrate, which is used to generate the characteristic red color in pyrotechnic displays.

Magnetics:

Strontium oxide is employed in the production of ferrite magnets, which are widely used in motors, sensors, and loudspeakers. These magnets are composed of strontium ferrite (SrFe₁₂O₁₉), which is produced from strontium oxide.

Medical Uses:

Strontium-89, a radioactive isotope of strontium, is used in medical treatments, particularly for the treatment of bone cancer. Strontium oxide powder is used as a precursor in the production of the isotope.

Electronics and Batteries:

Strontium oxide is used in certain electronic applications, including the development of high-energy batteries and electronic components. It can also be involved in the creation of certain types of photoelectric devices.

Environmental and Pollution Control:

Strontium oxide has applications in the scrubbing of industrial gases, specifically in removing sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and other pollutants. It can act as an absorbent for acid gases in flue gas treatment.
