Applications

Energy ProductionSolid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs): YSZ is one of the most widely used materials for electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The high ionic conductivity of YSZ allows it to conduct oxygen ions between the anode and cathode at high temperatures (typically 600-1000°C). YSZ-based SOFCs are used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy in applications such as stationary power generation, backup power systems, and hydrogen-based energy systems.

Oxygen Sensors:

Due to its ionic conductivity, YSZ is also used in oxygen sensors, particularly in automotive and industrial applications. YSZ sensors are capable of measuring the oxygen content in exhaust gases or other environments at high temperatures, providing vital data for engine control and emission control systems.

Electrolytes for Hydrogen Production:

YSZ is explored as an electrolyte in high-temperature electrolysis (HTE) processes for hydrogen production. The material’s ability to conduct oxygen ions at elevated temperatures is essential for efficiently splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources.

Aerospace and Thermal Protection

Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs):

YSZ is commonly used as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) in aerospace and gas turbine engines. The coating protects metal parts from the extreme heat generated during engine operation by providing a layer of insulation. YSZ’s high thermal stability and low thermal conductivity make it an excellent choice for enhancing the performance and lifespan of engines exposed to high temperatures.

Nozzles and Components in Gas Turbines:

In the aerospace industry, YSZ is also used to make components such as nozzles and turbine blades. These parts require materials that can withstand high-temperature environments while maintaining mechanical integrity. YSZ’s combination of toughness, heat resistance, and low thermal conductivity makes it ideal for such applications.
